Thought of the Day 2/8/21

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews‬ ‭4:12‬ ‭(ESV‬‬)

I am sure it was no coincidence that I read from a Bible reading plan just moments ago something that goes right along with today’s verse. God is like that — oftentimes putting the right word, verse, song, person, or event in our lives at the exact moment needed in order that the Holy Spirit might shed light on a spiritual truth to us. I just got done reading a thought about how interesting — and on the same token, sad — it is that the Bible is the most published/printed/produced book in the world yet possibly the least utilized. How many of us have a Bible or even multiple Bibles in our homes or on our phones and tablets, yet fail to read them and apply them to our lives? Many “excuses” are given such as we do not have enough time in the day with our jobs, or children, or medical emergencies. Perhaps some say the Bible is too hard to understand. I think if we are all honest with ourselves, though, today’s verse really cuts to the core of why we allow our Bibles to collect dust. “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 ESV) To put it bluntly — the Bible exposes our faults and convicts us in the areas of unrighteousness we are living out in our lives. As humans, we do not like to be told we are doing something wrong, and most of us do not like to invest the time to change or better ourselves, thinking we are “good enough” the way we are. That is a scary mindset to have come judgment day, for the Bible clearly states: “So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.” Romans‬ ‭14:12‬ ‭(ESV‬‬)

Open God’s Word today and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you and convict you of the areas that you need to improve upon. There is no shame at the cross for those who are covered by His blood and His grace and mercy!

Thought of the Day 1/11/2020

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears My Word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” John‬ ‭5:24‬ ‭(ESV‬‬)

There is a HUGE difference between simply hearing the truth of God’s Word (and His saving grace), and believing it! There are many self-proclaimed “Christians” sitting in church pews who will unfortunately find out when they leave this world that they must sit in judgement before God for not only their sin but not believing His Word. Those who have believed the truth that they have heard from the Word of God, however, will pass “from death to life” when they leave this temporary world for their eternal home. So, where do you fall? Have you only heard or have you believed and trusted the truth of God’s Word and redemption power?

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalms‬ ‭119:105‬ ‭(ESV‬‬)

Truly this is a dark and fallen world that we live in, and sometimes it can be so hard to know which way to go or what to do amidst all the darkness. It is especially in those times that we need to be like the Psalmist and dive into the Word of God. His Word will not only light up the darkness around us and illuminate the path He has planned for us, but it will empower us to shine His light to those who are lost in a sea of darkness. Have you recharged your spiritual light lately? Get into the Word right now — put down your phone or tablet and take some time with God.

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews‬ ‭4:12‬ ‭(ESV‬‬)

Theologian Charles Ellicott once wrote concerning this passage that: “the Spirit of God is never absent from His word.” The Word of God, the Holy inspired writings left to us in the Bible, deliver to us God’s great and perfect plan for all of mankind. When we follow His Word we are in step and in close communion with Him. When we are not in His Word or being disobedient (either unknowingly or deliberately) to it, beware that it will call us out. His Word, which is “living and active” will stand before us to accuse us on Judgement Day. This is why it has been described as “sharper than any two-edged sword”; the truth within the Word of God cuts straight to the “heart” or the soul of man — and, Lord willing, will lead to conviction and repentance. There is no greater mirror for the soul than the Word of God which sets forth His Holy and righteous standards. I would challenge you to open up the Word and see what state your soul is in; there is no time like the present to make sure all is right between you and God!

Thought of the Day 1/4/2021

But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”” Matthew‬ ‭4:4‬ ‭(ESV‬‬)

Jesus here quotes the scripture from Deuteronomy 8:3. The scripture Jesus quotes is telling the Israelites that God is able to sustain His people by any means, not simply only by an ordinary earthly source which at the time was bread. If our lives are fully surrendered to God with our trust in Him, He will provide for us and sustain us even by the very word of His mouth. For the believer this should not be that hard to imagine considering the words of His mouth spoke into existence all that is in creation — including you and I! Do you trust God for all of your daily needs?
